(Blog 9) Wikipedia Reflection

It’s no secret that I’m not the most tech savvy person in the world.  Yet, I can honestly say that my Wikipedia journey has been a rather interesting one.  When asked to pick a topic and figure out the type of entry we were going to do, I immediately thought of a subject that is familiar to me, Capoeira.  I needed to feel some comfort level with this assignment ; since I had no idea how to even search Wikipedia properly, let alone make an edit on one of its pages.

Surprisingly enough Wikipedia was not this monster I had created in my mind.  As I read through the Capoeira page I noticed that most of the information there was correct and it was backed up by reliable sources.  The more we learned about Wikipedia in class, the more my view of them shifted.  I began to see that they are a tight-knit community, composed by thousands of volunteers and a few employees who take their job very seriously.  I began to shift my way of thinking towards them and began to see them more as a business.

After a couple of weeks I decided to make my edit on the Capoeira page under the music section.  I wanted to give a more in-depth look at the different toques or rhythms that are played in the roda the Capoeira.  Since there are over 20 rhythms I chose my favorite five to write about.  I wrote about the kinds of games that are played with each rhythm, followed by some historical facts.

After I made an account with Wikipedia, I decided that I didn’t need a tutorial about how to post an edit.  Big mistake!  After my first attempt to post my edit, I soon realized how serious volunteers view Wikipedia.  After only a couple of seconds I received an email, followed by a message on the “talk” section of Wikipedia; stating that they were excited I was interested in contributing to Wikipedia, but that I was not adhering to their standards.  They further stated that I needed to provide reliable sources along with my edit.  I didn’t pay much attention to this first notice; because I already had a feeling I had done something wrong.  I couldn’t really figure out where my sources were supposed to go.  I made a second attempt at posting my edit, only this time I placed the sources in the wrong field.  Once again after a couple of seconds, I received the same email and message.  I began to feel frustrated, since I believed I was doing the right thing.

The volunteer’s screen name responsible for the Capoeira page is SudoGhost.  That night I wished I could put a face to the screen name. Oh, I did!  What aggravated me was the fact that it was after 11pm and I felt like he was waiting for my next post to reject it.  (I know what you’re thinking, so egocentric).  Well, the third time I decided to inspect the page more carefully before I posted and once again I was rejected.  Only this time I decided to click on some of the usernames under the “view history” section and saw that there was many warnings for people that kept on re-posting materials incorrectly.  Some people were actually suspended.  I decided to try to post my edit for the fourth and last time; only this time I did not only inspected the page, but I also watched some tutorial videos that were posted to the class blog.  Voila!!! Victory was mine!  I think I stayed up an extra 30 minutes checking on the page every couple of minutes.  I was ecstatic! I had beaten SudoGhost…or so I felt.

After I had a feeling that my edit was going to stay up, I began to keep a daily log of what was going on in the page.  I wrote five blogs called: “My journey through Wikipedia.”  I should have written a sixth one when I noticed that there was someone attempting to challenge my edit; but I thought that people were tired of my blogs, so I let it go.  As of today, I’m happy to report that there have been no changes to my post.

The blogging process helped me stay engaged with my entry and with this project.  I began to feel proud of the fact that my entry was accepted and that those were my words up there.  I really took ownership of this experience.  I’m still debating whether or not to erase my post after the semester is over.

Overall, I got more than what I expected out of this project.  I learned how to make an edit in Wikipedia, I gained some confidence by posting something on a major website (something I never did before), while also getting pleasing grades.

There’s not much I would change about this experience.  One thing I would have done differently is I would have read about or watched tutorials on how to post an edit.  I think that by skipping this essential step I wasted a lot of time and energy.  I would have saved myself a couple of hours of aggravation.

Overall, great project!

(Blog 8) In class assingment: Surfer Website = {www.shoedazzle.com}

Ok, so everyone knows that I’m not the most tech savvy person in the world.  Now that I have a name for it, I can definitely identify myself as a SEEKER.
I don’t really have that much time to waste on the internet, seeking for things or snooping on people’s life.  I don’t know… It just doesn’t do anything for me.  Since we had to identify a SURFER website in class today, I thought about the one thing that can always change my mood around and make my heart smile…SHOES!!!  YEAP!! You read that right!!! I stumbled upon this website on Facebook a couple of months ago called: www.shoedazzle.com .  It is very interactive, colorful; it does a great job at drawing the consumer in.  It can probably make someone become a compulsive buyer!! (Reason why I don’t go there often.)

First, one of the things that caught my attention is that ALL shoes are only $39.95.  Now this is a huge deal, because shoes can be very expensive these days.  Second, as soon as you go into the website you are not allowed to go forward until you take a style quiz to determine your style.  From there the website presents you with a line of custom made shoes for you.  The shoes are designed by famous designers and celebrities.  I think you also have the option of building your own shoes.  Other times, celebrities and designers build shoes for a certain cause and the proceeds will benefit a special charity.  (If that cause is dear to your heart, you will most likely buy a pair) Great advertising! ...  BUT WAIT!! They don’t stop there; they will also provide you with a line of handbags, jewelry and more.  Your line will change every month, because there are always new shoes, handbags and jewelry coming out.  JUST AMAZING!!

Anyhow, I think I gave enough details why this website is FABULOUS!!! You should go and check it out for yourself… (Not sure if they have man shoes)…Oh well!!! Still a great website! J

Journey through Wikipedia (5)

Day 4

Soooo… since everything seems to be ok with my entry now, this will be my last “update” post.  I know, I know… it’s sad… but we have to move on. L  My final blog about Wikipedia should be on my reflection about this whole process.  I probably will check on this from time to time… I kind of feel responsible for it now… or should I delete my entry all together once I get a grade for my assignment?!!? Not sure what to do? I don’t think I would ever post another entry there again...Well, never say never right?

Night everyone!

(Blog 7) In class assignment: "Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us"

Thoughts on the video we watched in class:

Wow!!! Powerful video… One sentence in particular caught my attention:  “The Web is no longer just linking information… The Web is linking people…”  We are so used to this advanced technology that we sometimes oversee the power that the web holds over our lives.  In this day in age we are connected/linked to everything, because the Web 2.0 IS linked to everything.  We can go to a page, click on a link that takes us to another page and another link completely different and so forth and so on.  It can be overwhelming to grasp the whole idea.  Also the way we blog, upload pictures, the websites we go on, emails, the links, posts, etc; all connect with everything else, making us part of this infinite network.  The number of people interacting with the web these days is astonishing and it keeps growing every second.
One thing we might be overseeing or that we might not stop to think about is that WE are the ones feeding this information and creating this whole other world.  Are we thinking carefully about everything that we feed into it? Are we ready to change our values? To give up our privacy?  To change the way we view and interact with the world today?  The title of the video is very intriguing and disturbing at the same time…The machine is US… The machine is USING us.  Something to think about…

See you in class tomorrow!

Journey through Wikipedia (3)

Day 2… after posting my entry

Had such a busy day! Didn’t really have a chance to check on Wikipedia earlier… I’m so tired but I couldn’t resist the urge to check my entry before I went to bed.  Annnnnnnndddddddd….. IT’S STILL THERE!!!   I think I have finally corrected my mistakes and I’m feeling pretty confident that they won’t be messing with my entry anymore.  This makes me happy! J

Ok, off to bed!

Journey through Wikipedia (2)

Day 1 after posting my entry...

{Surprised that I’m taking this project so seriously since it is the first thing I’m doing on a Saturday morning…}

Happy to report that my entry is still there! No email or message from SudoGhost! I guess what he/she was looking for was the references/sources, because as soon as I got that straighten out I never heard from him/her again.

On another note, I must say that I didn’t think Wikipedia took things this seriously.  I used to think it housed only incorrect and unreliable information (Ok so there is still junk information there) but, for the amount of staff they have and how quickly they responded to my entry; I can see that they do the best they can to keep Wikipedia as up to date and credible as possible. This experience is definitely changing my view about Wikipedia.  (Not saying I’m going to use it for research purposes, but I probably won’t bash it as much as I used to.)

Will check back on my entry tomorrow! Enjoy your Saturday everyone!

Journey through Wikipedia (1)

Who would of thought that posting an edit to Wikipedia would be so hard?!!?!?  I guess I picked a page that is highly monitored…  I’m about to pull my hair out!!!! Oh! And let me find out I know who this SudoGhost person is who keeps deleting my entries…. Ughhh!!! So frustrating! L
So, this has been my journey so far:
Typed up my entry in school, decided not to post it because I wanted to make sure I had enough time to deal with any unforeseen problems.  (Good thing I did this!!!)
I ended up posting my entry 3 times, because I thought you had to post your entry first and then post a separate entry for the reference.  Well, apparently not… (I think) Literally, a few seconds after I posted my entries I received this message:  (3 times = 1 for each entry)

Welcome

If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! SudoGhost 03:17, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

I’m still not sure I posted the 4th entry correctly.  However this time I added my sources right under my entry.  Before I had entered only one source, now I posted both.  Also, I don’t know if one of my sources might have been a problem since it was written in Portuguese.  I found a loop whole through that by translating the page to English.
Ok, so I just went to check on my edit again and YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! It has been a whole 30 minutes and no sign of SudoGhost anywhere.  Uffff!!! (Maybe he went to sleep since it’s after 11pm.)
Here is a picture I took with my Iphone of my entry: (I knooooowwww it's cut in half... you get the point)

Feeling a bit more confident… J
You lucked out professor, because I was about to start texting you!!! Lol
I will check back on this tomorrow!
Night, night for now!

(Blog 6) Wikipedia Entry

Here is the post I added to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira  (under the Music Section)

·  (cur | prev) 03:09, 18 February 2012Juliana2108(talk | contribs)‎ (40,306 bytes)

There are different rhythms or toques that are played by the berimbau inside the roda that will determine the mood and the game to be played.  All of the different rhythms have a history behind them.  Some were invented so the slaves could communicate with each other within the roda without having to say a word (ex. Cavalaria), while others were created to expand Capoeira (ex. Regional de Bimba).  Below is a description of five different rhythms of Capoeira:
Angola: It is the true origin of Capoeira.  It is traditionally the first rhythm to be played in a roda.  Its rhythm requires Capoeiristas to have a game that is slower and closer to the ground.  Capoeiristas usually play with their hands on the ground for most of the game, displaying strength and equilibrium.
SãoBento Grande: This rhythm is played in almost every roda. It calls for a lot of energy, acrobatic movements, take downs and leg sweeps.
Iúna: This rhythm is not played often in rodas.  It is usually played in batizados for Mestres and students with higher belts to display all of their abilities.  These abilities might include jumps, flips, hand stands, floreios, etc.  Mestre Bimba is believed to have invented this rhythm and created a sequence of movements called “cintura-desprezada” or “balões cinturados” to go along with it.
Cavalaria: In Capoeira this rhythm carries the most anxiety and stress.  It is the highest level of alert system in a roda. When Capoeira was still prohibited, this rhythm was played to alert the slaves that the police was coming.  The rhythm imitates the sound of galloping horses. Today it can be played to warn players of the dangers, violence and disagreements inside a roda.
Idalina: A relaxed, dominant rhythm played with razors and knifes.  Mestre Bimba also invented this rhythm.  Not played in rodas very often.
Other known rhythms are: São Bento Grande de Bimba, São Bento Pequeño, Samango, Santa Maria, Amazonas, Regional de Bimba, Samba de Roda, Banguela and Miudinho.

(Blog 5) Wikipedia Proposal

For my Wikipedia post, I’m going to be editing the Capoeira page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira.  I decided to make specific changes under the subsection: Instruments: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira#Instruments.  Here I will talk about the different rhythms or “toques” as it’s called in Portuguese that is played within the Roda de Capoeira.  I will also write about how the Berimbau (the main instrument) leads the rest of the “bateria” or the band through these rhythms.  I will write about my favorite rhythms and the ones that are most frequently played within the Roda.  These rhythms determine the feel and flow of the whole Roda.  One of my favorite “toques” is the Iuna and Cavalaria.
On the videos below you can see these “toques” being played by an Orchestra full of kids in Brazil.  These videos are a real site to see.  For those of us that know how prevalent violence and lack of education can be in 3rd world countries; we can rejoice by seeing kids being giving an opportunity and a different outlook in life through Capoeira.  These kids have been rescued from possible life threatening situations and given the opportunity to dream of a better future.  Hope you guys enjoy!

(Blog 4) Character Profile

In this picture Berronar, the god of safety and truth, is infuriated with his twin brother Abbathor, the god of greed, for destroying the village where Berronars’ mortal wife lived.  Abbathor was enraged at Berronar for attempting to give up his powers for his earthly wife.  Abbathor didn’t understand how could a god sacrifice all his powers for a mere mortal woman and decided that the best way to keep his brother from doing anything stupid was to murder her along with everyone in her village.  Little did Abbathor know that right before he destroyed the village, Berronar had succeeded in giving up his immortality.  Now, Berronar is a mortal without his beloved wife.  He felt especially guilty that since he was the god of safety he failed to keep his wife and the village safe.  Berronar has vowed to find his brother Abbathor and revenge his beloved wife.  This is how Berronar looked as he began his epic journey to find his brother Abbathor.  [If I were you I would run Abbathor, he is coming for you!]

(Blog 3) Exploratory Writing - Wikipedia Entry

Exploratory Writing for your Wikipedia Entry (things you would like to create or add to on Wikipedia, your interests in writing and how you would like to use those interests for this assignment, etc.)

Ok… So after giving some thought about this assignment I came to the conclusion that I definitely don’t want to start a whole new topic on Wikipedia.  I don’t have any new revelation to share with the world.  Another problem is that choosing a topic is also harder than I thought.   One topic that is of interest to me is Capoeira.  Capoeira is a Brazilian mix martial arts…. It’s a dance, it’s a fight…  Many people still never heard of it and the ones that have, define it wrong.  I have attached a quick video from my Capoeira group, "Capoeira Guerrreiros."

Besides my Capoeira topic, I really don’t know what to write.  Unfortunately I don’t have time to do as much creative writing as I would like to.  School currently takes up all my time.  I truly miss writing because some of my best writing comes out when I write about my personal life experiences.  Maybe, because there are no restrictions, no right or wrong answers, my imagination is allowed to run wild without any boundaries.  I will give some more thought about other topics that might be of interest to me.
